Tideswell or 'Tidsa' as it is know locally is an attractive Derbyshire village in the heart of the Peak District National Park. Also known as the 'Cathedral town of the Peak' for its magnificent 14th century Parish Church of St John the Baptist. Tideswell's four well-dressings are also among the finest in the Peak, taking place in Wakes Week at the end of June. In 2014 the various events take place from 22 to 29 June. The Tideswell Fell Race is on Friday 28 June a popular 4.4 mile fell race taking in the beautiful scenery of Tideswell Dale, the River Wye and Millers Dale.
There are also lots of lovely local walks including Tideswell Dale and the Monsal Trail (both of these walks are very easily accessible from Riverside House). The tunnels of the Monsal Trail are now open and make for a great cycle route too. There are many quiet country lanes, ideal for cycling including the deep gorge of the River Wye (Riverside House is right on it) and the traffic-free Monsal Trail, which follows the line of the former Midland Railway through some of the most spectacular dales scenery in the Peak (walk up to the Trail from the back of Riverside House or take your bikes up and then cycle along the old railway line to Monsal Dale).
There are two trails available that will take you around and about Tideswell. They are available from the information point next to Vanilla Kitchen cafe in the village. Tideswell is home to the Tideswell School of Food, a community run enterprise which is part of the Taste Tideswell project and the Silva Navigation School. Tideswell is now becoming a bit of a foodie delight. A new service has been launched called 'Shop in Tideswell' which is great for guests of Riverside House. You can order food products from local shops and have them delivered to the door of the holiday cottage. This a great initiative to promote local food and help keep local shops alive! There is a choice of veg boxes, fruits, meats, dairy produce, bread and some grocery items. Tideswell also has a local co-op supermarket, post office cum newsagent, Tindalls pie and bread shop cafes, delis as well as Peaches fruit and veg shop, a butcher, chemist, banks fish and chips as well as several pubs.
Peak Volumes bookshop is a new shop packed to the rafters with an eclectic mix of second hand and collectible books. It is a perfect place to browse on a day when the weather is inclement.
Tideswell is also home to the School of Cookery, where you can learn new cookery skills or take a brewing course or even go foraging. It's a great centre for group and family activities and the courses would make great gifts. Tideswell School of Food has been recognised in a national Cookery School Award scheme for Best Day Course, so it must be good!
The 2014 Tideswell Food Festival will be on Saturday 3 May. This a great day when local producers and shops will be displaying their products to taste and buy. There will be plenty going on at the School of Food too.
