Directions from the North, South and East

Top

  • Leave the M1 at Junction 29 and drive toward Chesterfield on the A617
  • In Chesterfield:
    • At the first roundabout take the centre lane and go straight across
    • At the second roundabout take the left hand lane and turn left
    • Take the left hand lane
    • At the traffic lights go straight through
    • At the third roundabout go straight over, taking the A619.
  • This is the Chatsworth Road. Follow this out of Chesterfield for 8 miles toward Baslow
  • At the next roundabout turn left, into Baslow
  • At the next roundabout, in Baslow, take the right hand lane and turn right
  • At the mini-roundabout turn left. This is now the A623
  • Follow the A623 for about 8 miles, which takes you through the village of Stoney Middleton.
  • After 8 miles turn left to Tideswell on the B6049
  • Go straight through Tideswell and carry on the B6049 for a further 2 miles until you reach Millers Dale
  • Turn left for Litton Mill. TAKE CARE! This is a very sharp left turn and should not be taken at speed.
  • Follow the single-track road along by the River Wye, under Ravens Tor to Litton Mill.
  • Riverside House is the FIRST house on the right hand side.
  • Turn in the area opposite the telephone box and park immediately alongside the house while gaining entry before parking in the private courtyard behind the double gates immediately next to the house

Directions from the West (good weather route)

Top

  • Leave the M6 at Junction 19 and head SOUTH initially to traffic lights with the A5033. Turn left onto the A5033 and head towards Knutsford.
  • Proceed into the centre of Knutsford. At a roundabout turn right, taking the signs for the A537 and Macclesfield.
  • Follow the A537 for some 11 miles, passing through the villages of Ollerton, Chelford, Monks Heath, Henbury and Broken Cross.
  • Keep to the A537 all the way through Macclesfield. This involves at least 6 roundabouts. Eventually you will come to a large traffic light-controlled crossroads where the left hand lane will be signposted Buxton.
  • About 8 miles along the A537, after the Cat and Fiddle pub, the A537 becomes the A54 before descending into Buxton and turning left into the A53.
  • Follow the signs through Buxton for Bakewell, which is on the A6 south of Buxton.
  • About 5 miles after leaving Buxton look for a left turn onto the B6049 which will be signposted for Tideswell.
  • After about 2 miles you will reach Millers Dale, where there is a right turn towards Litton Mill.
  • Follow the single-track road along by the River Wye, under Ravens Tor to Littonmill.
  • Riverside House is the FIRST house on the right hand side.
  • Turn in the area opposite the telephone box and park immediately alongside the house while gaining entry before parking in the private courtyard behind the double gates immediately next to the house.

Directions from the West (poor weather route)

Top

  • In snowy and icy conditions the high route from Macclesfield to Buxton can become dangerous and is often closed in the severest of winter weather.
  • In these circumstances it is best to leave the M6 at Juntion 20 and head towards the M60, Manchester ring road and head towards Stockport where the A6 can be picked up and followed all the way through Buxton to the turning with the B6049 to Tideswell (see Good Weather Route above).
